How to Remotely Check Messages & Record a Greeting on Answering Machines

Since the late 80’s, answering machines have had voice mail capabilities like that of cell phones using a touch tone keypad, but relatively few people are aware of this feature. Most upon purchasing an answering machine for their house simply plug it in, set a greeting, and leave it, without setting a code for remotely checking their messages. For fun, whenever you are about to leave a message anyway, try typing 1234 and see if you can get to the special menu that lets you control playing back messages and recording custom greetings. There are a variety of default passwords, of course, as manufacturers do not program their answering machines with identical settings.

To see a list of default codes, here’s a guide that demonstrates what to do and some common codes to check your voice mail. If you skim through the article you will see that knowing the brand of machine you’re dealing with helps greatly. If you need more information, try Google.

You can now leave that special someone a gag holiday greeting… for their callers!

Disclaimer: Do not try this on anyone other than people you know, such as your parents! http://digital-boom.blogspot.com will not be held responsible for you being held upside down out a window by the police and listed on the NSA watch list as a terrorist for leaving a greeting on your neighbor’s answering machine posing as Santa Claus!

"If you can fill a salt shaker, you can easily refill your own laser toner cartridge!"

Method 1 - Unplug Empty and Refill

This method of refilling your toner cartridge is very easy. Printer manufacturers including Brother, Samsung, & Konica Minolta have left the hopper cap on the outside of the toner cartridge. To refill remove the hopper cap, empty out the old toner and then pour in the new toner.

Examples of popular cartridges that use the "Unplug Empty and Refill" method:

  • Konica Minolta Magicolor: 2400W, 2430, 2450, 2480MF, 2490MF, 2500W, 2530DL, 2550DN, 2590MF
  • Brother: TN350, TN2000, TN6600, TN7600, HL2700, HL2400

  • Samsung: ML 1510, 1710, 1750, 4500, 4600
  • Xerox Phaser: 6120N, 6115MFP
Method 2 - Unscrew, Empty, Refill

Other toner cartridges have a single screw standing between you and a removable toner cap. Removing the screw or screws will reveal the hopper cap and allow you to empty and refill. A lot of cartridges can be refilled using this same basic method although each cartridge model may have more than one screw to remove.

Examples of popular cartridges that use the "Unscrew Empty and Refill" method:

  • Epson Aculaser: c900, c1000, c1900, c2000, c2600
  • HP: 1500, 2500, 2550, 2820, 2840

  • Lexmark: c500N, X500N, X502N
Method 3 - Melt and Pour

If your cartridge doesn’t have a removable hopper cap our "Melt & Pour" method is the best way to refill. Create a hole in your cartridge (in the correct place) and then refill the cartridge with toner.

Our melting tool is the easiest way of making a precise hole in your empty cartridge.Once you have created a hole, pour the toner in and seal with tape. Our starter kits for melt & pour cartridges have a backed, self-adhesive patch included.

Examples of popular cartridges that use the "Melt and Pour" method:

  • Hewlett Packard (HP): 1018, 1020, 1160, 1300, 1320
  • Samsung: CLP 300, CLX 2160 , CLX 3160
Method 4 - Twist, Empty and Refill

This method of refilling your laser cartridge is very simple.

Printer manufacturers including OKI & DELL use a toner tube rather than the standard conventional toner cartridge. To refill you simply "Twist, Empty & Refill"

Examples of popular cartridges that use the "Twist, Empty and Refill" method:

  • Dell: 3000CN, 3010CN, 3100CN, 5100CN, 5110CN
  • Epson : C1100, CX11N, CX11NF
  • OKI DATA: C3100, C3200, C5100, C5200, C5300, C5400, C5450, C5510, C5600, C5700
Photoconductor/OPC/ Drum Unit Reset

Printer manufacturers sell printers pre-programmed to run the "Photoconductor Unit" up to a certain number of prints.

Once that count is reached the machine will "Lock Up" until you purchase a new Photoconductor (Drum) Unit.

If your machine was printing good copies when the "replace drum message" appeared you can use our reset chips/fuses to extend the life drum unit.

(Certain drum units also need the waste toner section to be emptied. Our instructions will show you how)

Popular Drum Units that can be easily be reset:

  • HP: 1500, 2500, 2550, 2820, 2840
  • Dell: 3000CN, 3010CN, 3100CN
  • Epson: C1100, CX11N, CX11NF

Your cartridge might vary in exact detail from the examples above, but the principle will be the same.

4 ways to block spams from your Gmail inbox

While Gmail doesn't filter all spam messages that could reach your inbox, it still does a better job as compared to other webmails such as Yahoo Mail or Hotmail. Apart from consistent improvements being done on Gmail's filters, the utmost ingredient that contribute to the overall effectiveness is the use of community signals. Whenever you click on the "Mark as spam" button, Gmail uses that information to block similar future messages not only for you, but for all Gmail users.

As a matter of fact, regardless of how good a system is, there's always a small fraction of spams that manage to sneak up on our mailbox. So, here are few things that we can do to further eliminate spams attempt.

1. Block image spam

As the webmail filters get better, spam also evolves and becomes harder to block. This is particularly true when it uses images and literary texts. Here's a simple Gmail trick to divert spam messages (contain images) to the Trash folder (or any folder you specify) automatically.

Step 1: Firstly you need to go to 'Settings > Filters' and choose "Create a Filter".

Step 2: Type 'multipart/related .gif' in the 'Has the Words' field and also check the 'Has Attachment' box.

Step 3: Click next and select "Delete It" to move the spam message directly to the GMail Trash folder.

Note: There's a small chance of GMail filter triggering false positive and move few important emails from real senders to the Trash folder. To make sure this thing doesn't happen, create a new folder (label) in gmail and change the instruction to redirect all related mails to the new folder. You can sort out the mails later on during your free time.

2. The Plus Hack

If you like to sign up for internet freebies or buy things online, this tip will definitely come handy. Creating alias emails for aforementioned activities which are very likely to spam you, is an effective way to completely reduce number of spams in your Gmail mailbox. Not only you can track who is the culprit and you can also accurately learn with whom your email is shared with.

To do this, simply put a '+' after your account name and add words.

Example: I can do 'eches+online_deal@gmail' or 'eches+spammer@gmail.com'. All these mails will come into your mailbox anyway, but they can easily be filtered to a folder and even to trash them.

3. The Googlemail Hack

When you registered with Gmail account, you are actually given two email addresses

yourusername @gmail.com
yourusername @googlemail.com

You can use both without having fear the later might not reach your mailbox. Like the above trick, you can take advantage of these two domains so that less spam reaches your Gmail Inbox via filtering system.

For example you distribute 'yourusername @googlemail.com' address to your close contacts while keeping the 'yourusername @gmail.com' address for public. Set filter such that all 'yourusername @googlemail.com' to be delivered to a special folder. This is a definitive way to ensure important messages not to be diverted to Trash folder by mistake.

4. The Dot Hack

Gmail doesn’t acknowledge dots (.) in your account name. So I can use 'eches.net@gmail.com' or without any dots at all. Either way will return to 'echesnet@gmail.com'.

Again you can use the power of filter system to divert certain aliases to specific folders or directly to Trash folder.

I hope you can you use some of the tips above to reduce spams in your Gmail mailbox. Again, these tips are not definitive ways to completely eliminate spams but they can effectively reduce the spam numbers.

Screencast: How to Select Multiple Lines of Text in Firefox 3

With Firefox 3, you can easily select multiple and non-consecutive pieces of text from a web page as shown in this GIF screencast.

firefox-3-select-text

The secret is the Ctrl key. Select a line in Firefox with your mouse and then press the Ctrl key before selecting the second line.

Unlike other browsers like IE or Opera, Firefox will not clear your previous text selections if the Control key remains pressed at the time of selection. This feature will definitely come handy while clipping web pages.

For some reason, the trick did not work for me on Google Search pages and Google News but I guess the culprit is Firebug.

Email Etiquettes for Mobile Phone Users

email-etiquettes “Keep it short and sweet because if you don’t, you’ll get ignored.”

Christopher Elliott shares some good practices and etiquettes for sending e-mail messages to and from cell phones. Excerpts:

1. Begin messages with a one-paragraph summary of the entire e-mail, so readers on mobile devices can get to the heart of the issue immediately rather than scrolling down a tiny screen.

2. Keep your message so short and to the point that opening the actual message is unnecessary. For example, instead of a message header "call me, please," you should say "problem: pls call (your number)."

3. If you know you’re sending to a PDA (or mobile phone), mark your calendar to follow up with that person soon afterward, either by e-mail or phone. Because no matter how compelling your headline or your text, there’s still a good chance it might be forgotten.

Quickly Analyze Long Pieces of Text with Tag Clouds

Tag Clouds help you quickly visualize the content of a website. The font size of a word or phrase in a tag cloud is almost always proportional to the frequency at which that particular topic is covered on the website.

tag cloud

Web 2.0 sites like del.icio.us and Flickr introduced us to the concept of “tag clouds” but we can extend the idea and use tag clouds to analyze long pieces of text like blog feeds, speech transcripts, SEC filings, patents, software end-user license agreements (EULA), website privacy policies, etc.

Here are some sample text clouds created using speech transcripts and blogs.

A More Perfect Union – by Senator Barack Obama

barack obama

TechCrunch – Michael Arrington technology blog

techcrunch michael arrington

Future of Application Development - Bill Gates (his last speech as Microsoft chairman)

bill gates tech-ed speech

Stanford Commencement Speech - Steve Jobs

steve jobs stanford

I am Profoundly Sorry - Bill Clinton

bill clinton on lewinsky scandal

I Have a Dream – by Martin Luther King, Jr

martin dream speech

The above tag clouds are created with Wordle – one of the best tag cloud generators on the web developed by Jonathan Feinberg. The service also lets you change fonts, color schemes and even text orientation.

And Wordle is not just for generated tag clouds for your del.icio.us bookmarks, you can copy-paste any block of text and turn that into a beautiful tag cloud.

The Best Software Tools for the Paperless Office

paperless officeA scanner and an OCR software are the key components of a “paperless office”.

The scanner helps you bring existing paper documents like letters, invoices, books and faxes into the computer while the OCR software converts these scanned images into editable and searchable formats like PDF or Microsoft Word.

The program that came bundled with your scanner is probably good for controlling the quality of your scans but that’s just half the job done because image scans aren’t searchable and are therefore impossible to manage in the long term.

To complete the cycle, here are some of the best software tools and online services that will assist you in making a successful move towards a “paperless office”:

Abbyy FineReader – Abbyy FineReader 9 is an extremely powerful OCR software packed in an easy and very intuitive interface. It the only software you need in your quest for a paperless office though it doesn’t come cheap.

As you open a scanned image inside Abby FineReader, it automatically analyzes different areas of the image that contain text, tables or pictures. The software can even recognize different languages and fonts used in the document.

wallstreet

In my test run, the software successfully managed to extract text from an old manuscript with excellent accuracy. I then tried Abbyy FineReader 9 with a photograph of the Wall Street Journal newspaper (credit) that was captured with a digital camera and the results were equally impressive.

Abbyy 9 also features a Screenshot Reader utility that can directly extract text from any area of your desktop screen be it a wallpaper, a Flash presentation or a photo on Flickr.

The built-in spell checker suggests spellings and will help you quickly fix words that could be recognized by the Abbyy FineReader. The scanned documents can then be exported as searchable PDF files, Word documents or even HTML web pages.

Adobe Acrobat 9 – Adobe Acrobat (not the free Adobe Reader) can directly scan paper documents to searchable PDF documents.

adobe-pdf-scanner

In the test run, Acrobat could accurately scan a newspaper clipping with fairly high level of noise though it did not manage to preserve the layout while exporting the scanned image to a Word document.

Acrobat is again a commercial software but it does come bundled with some scanners.

SimpleOCR – Unlike Abbyy FineReader or Adobe Acrobat, Simple OCR software is a fairly basic solution but it is completely free and may appeal to budget conscious consumers.

Simple OCR lets you proof-read the scanned image as text so you can fix inaccuracies before exporting the scanned image as plain text.

scan-paper Scribd iPaper – If you have piles of paper documents in your office, you can easily get rid of them by sending everything in a snail mail to Scribd – this service will convert all your paper clutter into digital documents for free.

Scribd will also run your documents through their own OCR software so everything remains searchable as well.

Evernote – This is not an OCR software but it can easily recognized text in image. So if you have scanned a bunch of electricity bill receipts as images, you may use Evernote to locate them on the hard drive. The software is free and available for Mac and Windows.

Qipit, Snapter and ScanR are pretty similar solutions – they help use a digital camera or a mobile phone as a scanner. You capture a newspaper clipping, a page from a magazine or the conference room whiteboard room with your camera phone and turn to these services for extracting text out of the images.

How to manage your scanned documents ?

google-desktop-logoOnce you have converted your scanned images into scanned documents, you can bulk upload them to Google Docs (that comes with Google Apps) via email.

Alternatively, you can put everything on an hard drive and index them using Google Desktop search or via Windows Vista’s built-in search indexer.

Add Text Notes To Your Email Messages in Thunderbird

attach notes to email

You get an email invite from a friend about a community event that happens next week but his phone number is missing. How can you attach a phone number to the message ?

Most of the times people either print out the email and add hand written notes or forward the email to themselves with some notes. Well there is a more efficient way to do it through Xnote.

email sticky notesXNote is a Thunderbird extension that lets you associate sticky notes to emails. You can put anything text inside the note and it stays with your message forever.

The notes attached with messages are stored locally and therefore won’t sync via Gmail IMAP.

XNote works like charm on Windows but on Mac OS, it can be a bit slow and sometimes the sticky note remains hidden behind the message window.

This setting is available under Messages > Other Actions > Edit Message.

Marissa Mayer Keynote on How Google Works

This is a video recording of Marissa Mayer’s keynote that she recently delivered at the Google I/O Developers Conference.

You’ll learn some very interesting facts about Google in this video like how they use Split A/B testing to determine the right number of pixels between their logo and the search results. Or why Google ads have a light yellow background while the industry standard is blue.

When you perform a query on Google, it will hit anywhere between 700 - 1000 machines across different Google data centers before returning the search results on your screen - and the whole process takes less than a second.

Marissa Mayer also shares some interesting facts about user behavior:

a. The default number of search results on a page is 10. If Google increased that number to 20 or 30, people were using Google less because the search pages were taking more time to display on the screen.

b. When Google reduced the size of web pages by few KBs, the normal usage increased and people would search more because small pages load faster.

How to Translate PDF & Word Documents with Google Translation

google translate pdfSay dad bought you a digital camera from Japan but the problem is that the PDF manual that came with the camera is also written in Japanese.

How do you quickly translate that PDF file into an English document ?

Solution: If the PDF document is not password protected, you can easily convert it into another language via Google Translate.

The idea is that you extract the text from the PDF file and pass it to Google Translate. Here’s how:

Step 1: Open Zoho Viewer (review) and upload the file(s). Other than PDF, you may also upload common Office file formats like doc, xls and ppt.

Step 2: Zoho Viewer provides a unique URL for each of your web document. Go to Google Translate, type that web address, select a language pair and hit the Translate button. Voilà!

Important: If the source document is multi-lingual, you should considering uploading to Slideshare since they handle foreign languages slightly better than Zoho Viewer. See a sample document from Zoho and Slideshare.

Slideshare will create a text transcript of your PDF document that can you pass on to Google Translate for converting into another language.

You may even extract text from PDF documents using Adobe Reader itself but again, this program doesn’t work too well with all languages.

Opera 9.5 Review: It is More Than Just a Beautiful Browser

opera-browser

While the Techmeme crowd is busy talking about the upcoming Firefox 3 release, one cannot ignore Opera (version 9.50) web browser that has just left the building.

Opera 9.5 sports a sleek metallic interface and I find it very stable when compared with Firefox 3 RC2 which crashes so often on Windows Vista - let’s hope Mozilla fixes that in the final release.

If you compare the layout of Opera 9.5 with IE or Firefox, you’ll notice a small difference – Opera places browser tabs above the address bar while the other browser do the reverse. This is a minor change but good nevertheless.

web-page-loading

There’s another very useful feature of Opera 9.5 that you should not miss. Go to Tools –> Appearance –> Toolbars and select the “Show Inside Address Bar” option under Progress Bar.

Now as you open websites, the address bar gets replaced by a progress bar and you can know the exact reasons why some page may be loading slow on your machine.

There’s another unique feature in Opera 9.5 – if you have multiple websites open inside the browser, you can arrange them as tiles or cascade them just like the Windows Desktop.

arrange-windows

And the best part is the intelligent address bar of Opera 9.5. It suggests websites as you type looking into your browser history – and Opera doesn’t just look into the page titles or the URL, it looks into the actual content of the web page as well while giving you suggestions. Brilliant.

Publish Your Favorite Websites In a Single Web Page with Zoho Notebook

zoho notebook How do you share a bunch of websites with grandma? Normally, you would put all the links in an email message and send it across.

So here’s a more elegant solution that uses Zoho Notebook – a very powerful note taking app on the lines of Microsoft OneNote. And you can easily login through your existing Yahoo! or Google Account credentials.

First, check this public page to get an idea about what the final solution would look like. And here are various steps involved:

Continue this process until you have added all your favorite web pages to that particular book.

These web pages will appear as vertical tabs in the right sidebar. You can double click the tabs to give them a more meaningful name (e.g. CNN). You can also change the order of website tabs by simply dragging them up or down.

When you are done, go to Publish –> Book. Copy the URL of the Zoho Notebook and email it to your gradma – she will love this. Here’s a finished presentation.

Turn Google Docs Into an RSS Reader and Feed Aggregator

google-docs-rss-reader

This tutorial shows how to use a Google Docs spreadsheet as an RSS Feed reader (see example). You can aggregate news feeds from different sources into one spreadsheet (similar to alltop or popurls or addictomatic) and then publish it as a web page.

If you have a blog, you can use the same trick to embed RSS feeds in web pages. The Google Docs approach is preferred over Flash or Javascript widgets because here you have complete control over the presentation layout and formatting of content.

So before we get started, let’s look at a real example. The following Google Docs snippet shows live feed data from some top technology blogs.

Here are the complete step involved for putting RSS feeds into Google Docs. We use a single feed in the example but you can extend the idea for any number of feeds.

1. Open a new spreadsheets and type the URL of any web feed in cell, say A1.

2. In cell A2, type =ImportFeed(A1, “Items Title”, FALSE, 10) – This will fill column A with the titles of the latest 10 stories in that feed.

3. In cell B2, type =ImportFeed(A1, “Items URL”, FALSE, 10) – This will fill column B with the URL (permalink) of the corresponding stories in column A.

4. In cell C2, type HyperLink(B2, A2) – This will combine the title and URL to make a clickable link that will be available when you publish the sheet as a web page.

5. Copy paste the contents of cell C2 in C3 until C11.

You can experiment with different fonts, colors, sizes, etc. Now go to Publish –> More publishing options, type C2:C13 in the range and get the HTML embed code.

Google Docs will automatically refresh content when the underlying RSS feeds are changed. Here’s a quick walkthrough in video:

snagit 9 screenshotsTechSmith today released SnagIt 9 – the best screen capture program for Windows. SnagIt 9 is available for download on Windows XP and Vista systems though the Mac version is still in the works.

The screen capture features in SnagIt 9 are more or less the same as in previous versions but they have completely revamped the user interface on the lines of Office 2007 Ribbon.

The image editor included in SnagIt 9 is more powerful than ever before and offers a plethora of tools / images effects to make your screenshot images look more professional. Here’s a list of some favorite features included in SnagIt 9:

1. Office 2007 Ribbon Interface – If you are already using an Office 2007 program like PowerPoint or Word, you would have no trouble getting “fluent” with the new SnagIt 9 interface. Others may take some time to master the new layout but once you are comfortable, you’re going to love it.

2. Crop Screenshot Images Quickly – You can now remove the white space areas around screen captures in a click using the trim command that you may have seen in Photoshop as well. SnagIt 9 will crop everything surrounding the actual image like in the above case of Google logo.

What’s more interesting is that SnagIt 9 even remembers the name of the application where that screenshot was taken. For instance, if you search for Firefox, you will see all images that were captured inside the Firefox window. This is awesome.

4. Flags and Keywords – You can tag your screenshots with Flags and / or keywords. May sound a bit confusing but Flags are like categories – you could have one for Website screenshots, one for Bank Transactions, etc. You can further describe these images via keywords like amazon, bank, yahoo, etc.

snagit logo Since I am an Office 2007 user for a long time, getting used to the new Ribbon interface of SnagIt 9 didn’t take much effort though I wish there was an option to change the color theme like in Office 2007. The new release of SnagIt is highly recommended for power users since it makes it very easy to manage your large collection of screenshot images.
